A.) Find the work done by an ideal engine which extracts 8900.0 J of heat from its hot resevior while operating between 550.0 K and 370.0 K.

B.) The work from the engine goes into an ideal refridgerator which extracts 5300.0 J of heat from its cold resevior. FInd the coefficient of performance of the ideal refridgerator.

Solutions

Expert Solution

for an ideal heat engine

the efficiency formula is

T2 is lower temperature and T1 is heigher temperature

and        w    work done , Q is heat absorbed

combining these two we get work done by ideal heat engine is

                         = (1- 370/ 550)8900

                         = 2912.72 J

B) coefficient of performance = Q / W     Q is heat extracted from the cold reservoir, W work done

                                               = 5300 J / 2912.72 J

                                               = 1.81
