in 500-750 words about the challenges to a group's human rights, as we imagine them. Be sure to identify the specific rights that are being violated and comment on any solutions to the problem (real or imagined). Identify your source in your paper.
Certain challenges for Human Rights are inequality, poverty, discrimination, armed conflict and violence, etc.
A specific right that is being violated which will be elaborated further in this paper is Discrimination. When basic rights are denied on grounds on race, religion, ethnicity, gender it is known as discrimination.
People in the field of Psychology are in an optimal position to help face these challenges of human rights on a day to day level. Psychology, being the study of mind and behaviour can promote positive behavioural changes among people by changing their outlook and perceptions about people.
The basic hindrance or challenge to human rights are the social norms which do not have a valid basis. These social norms create a motivational pressure among members to collectively behave in a certain way which would make them stand out from others. Therefore a major reorganization of values and restructuring of norms is required. Humane values of understanding, empathy and goodwill needs to be fostered. (Ellie Castine, 2015, APA)
One way to find a solution to this mental prejudice of discrimination is education. Education would help break unrealistic social norms and create a society that is based on logical reasoning. Moreover, through education there would be more intergroup contact. For example, students of various groups would play together and learn together. This would foster positive attitude towards each other and break barriers.
Another way of fighting discrimination is recategorization of groups. In this process, the 'in-group' is re-made with the group that was being discriminated (out-group). This recategorization takes place because of newly found common grounds of similarities. For example, the blacks and whites finding a common cause of being united such as going to the same college. (Dr. R. Jhangiani; Dr. H. Tarry)
Therefore, intergroup conflicts and discriminations would improve when people focus on connection more than differences. This is the core to achieving the larger human rights.
