Transparency International (TI) which publishes the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) and annually ranks countries. Do you agree with TI's assessment of the United States, India, and Somalia? Why or why not?
Corruption is an act done by the government officials of any
country abusing their public powers for private gain, through
bribery and other such activities. In 2019, according to
Transparency International (TI), U.S.A. ranks 23 , which means the
corruption rate is low as compared to other 180 countries, falling
from 18th rank since2016. TI stated that United States of America
experiences threats for the system of balances and checks, and
along with the erosion of norms at the major level of power.
In India corruption has become an issue which affects the central
aa well as state economy and local government agencies. It has held
back the economy from touching new heights aa well aa stunted the
nation’s development. In 2019, as per the reports of Transparency
International India ranks 85 out of 180 countries. More than 62% of
Indians at some point of time paid a bribe to get their job done.
But the country has reflected a steady decline in perception about
corruption among the citizens in recent years. The most corrupt
section of the country is public and social spending schemes
implemented by the government. The major cases of corruption in the
country includes extra regulations, licensing systems, tax system,
monopoly of government institutions on various goods and less
transparency of laws and black money.
Corruption in Somalia not only includes the extreme levels of
corruption in public sectors but also the private sectors. As per
TI, in 2019, Somalia ranks 180 out of 180 countries which
represents the excessive level of corruption problem in the
country. In 2013, the government announced to launch a Public
Finance Management Policy to render transparent and accurate public
sector’s financial system, and strengthen the capacity of delivery
of the financial sector of government. There are many steps taken
by the newly elected government of the country in 2017, against
corruption but the country’s institutions are same as to be
excessively dysfunctional, and limited steps taken to curb the
problem. The informal clan and practices as well as religious
exercises sway over the nation’s political powers. The government
fails to provide the basic services to the citizens, of the
country, and security remains precarious.
Transparency International has very ell ranked the countries under
Corruption Perception Index, as per the situations of corruption in
these countries and the steps taken against it. Many of them have
coped up in recent times but few like Somalia still continue to be
ranked as the most corrupt country. It has to formulate more
policies and strictness against this evolving problem, otherwise it
will lead the such countries to the verge of destruction.
