Classify the following random variables as discrete or continous.
1) The surface area of a randomly selected person's body.
2) The quantity of oil in a randomly selected oil spill in the sea.
3) The quantity of pots in a randomly selected restaurant kitchen.
4) The total cent value of all the coins in a randomly selected person's pockets.
A discrete variable is a variable whose value is obtained by counting.
Examples: number of students present
number of red marbles in a jar
number of heads when flipping three coins
students’ grade level
A continuous variable is a variable whose value is obtained by measuring.
Examples: height of students in class
weight of students in class
time it takes to get to school
1) The surface area of a randomly selected person's body.
= contionous because values are obtained by measuring
2) The quantity of oil in a randomly selected oil spill in the sea.
= continous variable beacuse we need to measure oil with som measurement device.
3) The quantity of pots in a randomly selected restaurant kitchen.
= discrete vaiable since we have to count pots .
4) The total cent value of all the coins in a randomly selected person's pockets.
= discrete variable because we need to count all coins and then find value of total cents.
