Design and briefly describe an experiment you could conduct to determine whether infants can tell the difference between the shapes of different letters in the alphabet. How is the experiment structured, how will you use the results to decide what you have discovered, and are there any ethical considerations you must deal with?

Expert Solution

Infants while starting communicating to the world their mind catches faster than a normal person because the entire think tank is empty . So to communicate better the infants gradually understand that there are some process of communications which they have to gone through and their brains started working on it. When they started reading letters they are not aware of , but they gradually try to follow the designs and the vertical and horizontal lines and through which they try to keep remember the letters. They might dont know that a letter is called A or B etc but they have designs which got copied earlier in their mind so through a memory recall they relay the designs as it was in the picture and which letter comes after what. Further another tool they use is the sounds of pronounciations that which is connected to the letters. In this way they are habituated with the letters in a different way than the elders. Infants always remember through the designs better , for example A and V , they got designs in their mind that its just opposite to the others . In this way they identify the letters.

Design an experiment that you could perform in our lab to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction and static friction and to compare the coefficient of kinetic friction and static friction. A good design should include details of the materials and equipment needs, the experimental procedure, including precautions, the types of data you will collect, how the data will be represented and analyzed, and how you will determine the accuracy of your experimental result(s).

Conduct a research design. You have been asked by a university to determine whether living in dormitories improves student satisfaction and learning outcomes.  Propose a research design to assess this question.  Good answers will invoke parts of the research design process that we have been discussing: research questions; hypotheses; dependent variable; independent variable; population targeted; unit of analysis; data collection strategy; plan of analysis (i.e., what will you be comparing?).

Describe clearly an experiment in which you could determine the resistivity of a material. The materials include ammeters, voltmeters, batteries, connecting wires, and multiple pieces of wire made of the unknown material, each with different length and cross-sectional area, electronic balance, diffraction grating, a ruler, a caliper and an air track. The resistivity must be obtained as the slope of a graph. What quantities should be plotted along the axes?
