A sample of gas contains 4.44 moles of oxygen, 1.35 moles of nitrogen, and 1.13 moles of carbon dioxide. If the total pressure is 4.14 atm, what is the partial pressure of the oxygen in atm?

Solutions

Expert Solution

no of moles of O2 nO2   = 4.44 moles

no of moles of N2 nN2    = 1.35 moles

no of moles of CO2 nCo2   = 1.13 moles

mole fraction of XO2     = nO2 /nO2 + nN2 + nCo2

                                             = 4.44/4.44+1.35+1.13

                                     = 4.44/6.92   = 0.64

partial pressure of O2 PO2    = XO2 *PT

                                               = 0.64*4.14   = 2.6496atm
