A 140litre container is to be used to store heat for a domestic heating system. There are two options for the storage material, lead blocks or clay bricks. Using the data provided determine which is the best option for the system.

Lead: specific heat 130J/kgK, density 11340kg/m3

Brick: specific heat 840kJ/kgK, density 2000kg/m3

2. A container holds 0.25m3 of compressed air at 900kPa and 20°C. This is expanded polytropically via a process with n=1.3 to a pressure of 150kPa. Determine;

(2 marks each)

  1. The mass of air
  2. The final air temperature
  3. The work transfer, stating if it is input or output work
  4. The change in internal energy
  5. The heat transfer , stating if this is heat input or output

In areas of enhanced heat flow, geothermal heating can be used to supply heating to homes, either by using ground water directly or by placing a water reservoir at depth. In Iceland, where the average temperature over the year is 6.1ºC, the geothermal flux can be as high as 300 mW m-2. (a) If you wanted to be able to supply a home with water at a temperature of 50ºC, how deep would your reservoir need to be? (b) Why...

Propane (C3H8) is used in domestic cooking and heating. a) A typical home in Massachusetts burns 850 gal of propane for heating over the course of a year. How many moles of propane are burned? (Some useful information you’ll need: density = 4.2 lb/ gal; 1 lb = 453.59 g) b) Propane reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. i) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction above. ii) How many moles of carbon dioxide are released...

Refrigerant 134a is the working fluid in a vapor-compression heat pump system with a heating capacity of 60,000 Btu/h. The condenser operates at 180 lbf/in.2, and the evaporator temperature is 0°F. The refrigerant is a saturated vapor at the evaporator exit and a liquid at 110°F at the condenser exit. Pressure drops in the flows through the evaporator and condenser are negligible. The compression process is adiabatic, and the temperature at the compressor exit is 180°F. Determine (a) the mass...

perfectly insulated container with no heat capacity is used to mix together the following three samples of water: I.183.2 grams of water at 23.2 °C II.32.1 grams of water at 14.2 °C III.143 grams of water at an unknown temperature. After the three samples are combined, the final temperature of the combined solutions is 39.0 °C. What is the temperature of sample III before the samples were mixed together?

A pump is used to circulate hot water in a home heating system. Water enters the well-insulated pump operating at steady state at a rate of 0.42 gal/min. The inlet pressure and temperature are 14.7 lbf/in.2, and 180°F, respectively; at the exit the pressure is 90 lbf/in.2 The pump requires 1/35 hp of power input. Water can be modeled as an incompressible substance with constant density of 60.58 lb/ft3 and constant specific heat of 1 Btu/lb · °R. Neglecting kinetic...

A simple, direct space heating system is currently being used in a professional medical office complex. An upgraded “variable air-volume system” retrofit can be purchased and installed for $200,000 (investment cost). Its power savings in the future will be 500,000 kilo-Watt hours per year over its estimated life of 8 years. The cost of electricity is $0.10 per kilo-Watt hour. If the firm’s cost of capital is 12% per year and the residual value of the system in 8 years...
