[8] What are acids and bases? Describe the two terms giving examples that you commonly use. Explain the term ‘pH’, its equation, and provide a few numbers representing the pH scale! Explain the term ‘Acid Rain’, its formation and its detrimental effect on environment.

Solutions

Expert Solution

acid and bases

acids is the substance which release protons or H+

bases are the substance readily accept protons

lewis acid and bases

lewis acid is the substance that readily accept pair of electrons

lewis base is the substance that readily donate the pair of electrons to the electron acceptors

examples

acid : HCl, HCN

base : NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3, NaHCO3

lewis acid : AlCl3, FeCl3

pHis the parameter used to measure the acidic strength of the substance

pH = -log[H+]

acid rain

it the rain fall take place in acidic condition due to environmental pollutions, the main cause for acid rain is due to burning of coal and fossil fuels

in acid rain either SO2 and water react or nitrogen oxide and water reacts to form acids

SO2 + H2O ----------------> H2SO4

these rain will kill the aquatic life like fishes and other species and it will destroy the forest
