Expert Solution

Antacid is a chemical substance or medicine which are used to neutralize the acidity in the stomach. These provide relexation from heartburn, acid ingestion and sour stomach. Human body produces hydrochloric acid which helps in digestion of food. However, during indigestion stomach produces too much acid leading to pain and irritation. To get relief from pain the bases i.e. antacids are used to neutralize the excess acid present in the body.

Antacids which are bases leads to neutralization reaction in the stomach as stated below-

Acid + Base → Salt + Water

Examples of antacids include : Alka-Seltzer, Milk of Magnesia, Alternagel, Amphoje, Gelusil etc.

Antacids contains either of one of these components- carbonate or sodium or magnesium hydroxide or aluminium hydroxide.

Side effects of antacids vary according to their ingridients.

Aluminum causes constipation, low blood phosphate levels, aluminium toxicity, osteomalacia Calcium leads to nausea, vomiting, kidney stones, high blood calcium levels, alkalosis Magnesium causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, high blood magnesium levels Sodium bicarbonate causes increased blood pressure, nausea, bloating, gas.

Nothing is clearly specified regarding the products (which products are to be choosen). Hence, can not answer that part of question.

Project 7:   Acids and Bases A neutralization reaction depends on the transfer of a proton, hydrogen, from one substance to another. The substance that donates the proton is an acid. That which accepts the proton is a base. pH is a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ion in a solution. The strength of an acid is determined by its ionization potential, or the relative amount of the hydrogen ion present in a compound that can be donated. If...

Unlike strong acids and bases that ionize completely in solution, weak acids or bases partially ionize. The tendency to ionize (i.e., the ionic strength) of a weak acid or base can be quantified in several ways including Ka or Kb, pKa or pKb, and percent ionization.
