How to calculate mole fractions

How to calculate mole fractions

Solutions

Expert Solution

mole fraction can be calculated from moles of substances . if you need any compound mole fraction you have to divide one compound moles to the total moles

mole fraction = moles of one substance / moles of all substances

suppose we have 1 mole H2 , 2 mole N2 , 3 mole O2 in the mixture . now we can calculate mole fraction of each gas

mole fraction of H2 = moles of H2 / total moles

                              = 1 / (1 + 2 + 3)

                              = 1 / 6

                             = 0.17

mole fraction of N2 = moles of N2 / total moles = 2 / 6 = 0.33

mole fraction of O2 = moles of O2 / total moles = 3 / 6 = 0.5

note : sum of all mole fractions should be equal to 1

0.17 + 0.33 + 0.5 = 1.0
