queous KNO3 solution is made using 84.7 g of KNO3 diluted to a total solution volume of 2.06 L . (Assume a density of 1.05 g/mL for the solution For this solution, calculate percent by mass For this solution, calculate mole fraction.

Solutions

Expert Solution

volume of solution = 2.06L   = 2060ml

mass of KNO3   = 84.7g

mass of solution = volume of solution * density of solution

                            = 2060ml*1.05 g/ml = 2163g

percent by mass in the solution = mass of solute*100/ mass of solution

                                                     = 84.7*100/2163   = 3.92%

mass of H2O   = mass of solution - mass of KNO3

                       = 2163-84.7   = 2078.3g

no of moles of H2O (n H2O) = W/G.M.Wt

                                             = 2078.3/18   = 115.46moles

no of moles of KNO3 (n KNO3) = W/G.M.Wt

                                   = 84.7/101   = 0.8386moles

mole fraction of KNO3    =   n KNO3/n KNO3 + n H2O

                                       = 0.8386/0.8386+115.46

                                        = 0.8386/116.2986   = 0.0072
