The practice of domestication of large animals like cattle, goats ,sheeps provided large amount of proteins at need of the hour without any problems. It also provided many items like milk products, fabrics etc as secondary products. So domestication was a huge step for feeding very large population.

All the reasons given here are more or less beneficial to the biosphere if people go vegetarian. Energy efficiency is the most important factor of being vegetarian. When we eat animals, most of the energy present in their body are already lost as heat and only a small fraction of it reaches us. However if we eat plants , we will get more energy from the same amount of food. It means more population can be feed with minimum space being vegetarian. Moreover as we know energy becomes less and less whenever we go to top of the food chain(10% law), we must eat producers for maximum energy.
