The dioxo actinyl ions AnO2n+ (An = U, Np, Pu, Am; n = 1, 2) comprise a uniform series that exhibit a linear O-An-O geometry irrespective of the oxidation state (i.e., V−VI) or valence electron count (i.e., f =0−f =5).
THe photochemical reduction of the (6+) state makes the 4+ or the 5+ state. The uranyl(V) carbonato complex can be prepared in an aqueous solution electrochemically and its fundamental properties have been well studied by UV−visible absorption, Raman, X-ray absorption, and NMR measurements and theoretical calculation.
A systematic investigation is to be performed using a platinum mesh electrode in order to reveal the appropriate conditions for stabilizing uranyl(V) species. The reduced product of the uranyl(V) carbonate species could be stabilized in the Na2CO3 solution with concentrations higher than 0.8 M. the uranyl(V) carbonate species is stable only in the limited pH range of 11.7 < pH < 12.0.Additionally, the stability of the uranyl(V) carbonate species also depends on the concentration of UO22+, and it decreased with increasing UO22+ concentration. Characteristic absorption bands for the uranyl(VI) carbonato complex will considerably decrease after electrolysis, suggesting that UO22+ is successfully reduced to UO2+. The uranyl(V)/uranyl(VI) ratio in the sample after the electrolysis is estimated as from the absorbances by assuming that the uranyl(V) species has no absorbance at this wavelength.
