Do you agree with paying people for competencies and skills that are rarely required to use on the job?
I believe, a person is formed with the personality that he possess and presents to the world. This Personality is the combination of values, skills and competencies that a person is either born with or adapted to . There are in fact, few skills or competencies that are inter-dependent with each other although an entity may just require one of those competencies. For example, one has a sharp mindset and a good writing skill. However, in his job, where written communication is stressed upon, the Company may be primarily be concerned only with his writing skills but his sharp mindset is the reason behind the birth of that skill and hence inseparable. Moreover, it is practically not even feasible to draw a line between what sort of competencies an individual possess, is important on the job and what is not. We can only afford to overall analyze such an individual based on his overall caliber and performance. Paying hence for just those competencies and skills that are required to be used on the job is hence a very complex and irrational thought. An employer may never know, how and in what context he can tap on the rest of such skills of an employee. Therefore, I certainly agree with the above statement.
