What are the three major fluid compartments?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer

Three major fluid compartments are :

  1. Intracellular fluid comparment
  2. Interstitial fluid compartment
  3. Intravascular fluid compartment / blood plasma

- Interstitial and Intravascular fluid compartment are together known as extracellular fluid compartment.

1. Intracellular fluid comparment

  • It includes fluid within the cells of the body.
  • About 67% of total fluid volume in the body is intracellular.

Extracellular fluid account for about remaining 33% of total fluid volume in the body.

In extracellular fluid comparment :

2. Interstitial fluid compartment

  • It includes fluid inbetween the cells. This fluid surrounds the cells of the body.
  • About 26% of total fluid volume in the body is interstitial.

3. Intravascular fluid compartment

  • It includes fluid within the blood vessels. The component of blood excluding blood cells in called blood plasma or intravascular fluid.
  • About 7% of total fluid volume in the body is intravascular.

- Cerebrospinal fluid fluid also accounts for a very small proportion of fluid that is less than 1% of total fluid volume.
