The structure of NaCl is given. Determine its lattice constant, a, and its density. Hint: since NaCl is ionic use the ion radius data and the atomic radii.
NaCl has FCC structure.
Lattice constant, a can be calculated using ionic radii of Na+ and Cl-.
Ionic radius of Na+ is 1.02 and radius of Cl- is 1.81
Thus, a=(2*radius of Na+)+(2*radius of Cl-)
a=(2*1.02)+(2*1.81)
Lattice constant,a=5.66=5.66*10-8cm
Density for FCC is given by
where n is the number of atoms per unit cell=4 (For FCC, n=4)
M is the molecular mass of NaCl=58.44 g/mol
NA is Avogardo's Number= 6.022*1023 atoms/mole
