A tank of acetylene gas (C2H2) contains 52.0lb of the gas and is at a pressure of 511.2lb/in.2 .
Express the pressure of the gas in atmospheres. 760 mmHg= 14.696 lb/in.2.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given pressure ,P = 511.2lb/in.2

We know that 1 atm = 760 mmHg= 14.696 lb/in.2

                       So 1 lb/in.2 = (1/14.696) atm

                                         = 0.068 atm

Therefore pressure , P = 511.2lb/in.2

                                     = 511.2x 0.068 atm                  Since 1 lb/in.2=0.068 atm

                                     = 34.78 atm

So the pressure in atm is 34.78 atm

Before small batteries were available, carbide lamps were used for bicycle lights. Acetylene gas, C2H2, and solid calcium hydroxide were formed by the reaction of calcium carbide, CaC2, with water.
