Which statement about the Sublingual gland is true?
It secretes only serous fluid.
It secretes mainly mucous fluid.
It secretes both serous and mucous fluids equally.
It is a salivary gland found just below the mandible.
b) It secretes mainly mucous fluid
The sublingual glands are one of the three paired salivary glands and they are also the smallest ones. They are majorly involved in the production of the mucous fluid which tends to moisten the food and it helps in lubricating and breaking down the food particles in smaller particles. As they majorly secrete the mucous fluid, it is drained into the duct of Rivinus.
The first option is not right because they are not involved in production of the serous fluid. Within the mouth, it is the parotid gland which is involved in the production of the serous saliva. They are a mix of proteins and water and they help in the overall process of digestion, excretion as well as the respiration.
The third option is not correct because an equal mixture of the serous and mucous fluid is secreted by the submandibular gland. They are pair of salivary glands that are located below the lower jaws and after the secretion of the fluid, it enters into the Wharton duct.
The 4th option is not correct because it is located it is located anteriorly and superiorly to the submandibular gland. They basically lie on the floor of oral cavity.
