The cell bodies of postganglionic neurons are located _________ the CNS in autonomic ganglia, with fibers terminating on the effector organ.

a. throughout b. outside c. inside d. overlying

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

Option B (Outside)

Explanation: The human nervous system has two major divisions; namely the CNS (central nervous system) and the PNS (peripheral nervous system). While the CNS has brain and the spinal cord being their components; the PNS comprises of the spinal and the cranial nerves originating from them.

The PNS has two sub divisions namely; the somatic neural system and the ANS (autonomic nervous system).

ANS is the component of the nervous system which controls and regulates the involuntary activities of our body. The system comprises of two major divisions of the ganglions (group of neurons) namely the preganglionic neurons and the postganglionic fibers. While the cell bodies of the neurons of the preganglionic fibers are located within the CNS, the cell bodies of the post ganglionic neurons lie outside the CNS thereby directly terminating on the surfaces of the target/effector organs.
