D. Cerebral cortex
E. Limbic System

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer - (A) Basal Ganglia Nuclei

Parkinson is the disease associated with the degeneration of the nerve cells which mainly affects the basal ganglia part of the brain which is also known as substantia nigra.

It occurs due to the dopamine imbalance and have some specific symptoms like in this peoples suffers from shaking stiffness and they face difficulty in walking talking and coordination etc.

This disease shows a common prevelance seen equally in both men and females and majorly seen after the age of 50 or 60 , this disease occurs due to the damage of neurons in the brain so this is called degenerative disorder .

This neurons normally secrete a chemical substance called dopamine and this is useful in coordination balance activity but due to the damage of the these neurons the dopamine secretion becomes less and patient suffers this disorder.

It is also seen that patient of parkinson disease also suffers from the deficiency of chemical noreoinephrine which is helpful in maintaning blood pressure and some major sympathetic functions.

In this there are few specific symptoms are seen like the tremors in the body , disturbed movement and coordination , slowness of the body etc.

This disorder is majorly brain affecting and dopamine restoration is important as a treatment ,

while from options we choose basal ganglia because neurons whom secrete the dopamine in the body are present here and due to the destroy of these neurons affects the level of dopamine and causes the parkinsonism.

while others parts of brain are involved in different functions of body.

In which limbic system is a different region of subcortical area and concerned with the detection and regulation of memory emotions fear arousal etc.

while some are part of CNS which regulates the other functions like learning memory etc which is cerebral cortex etc.

So these parts are not concerned with dopamine secretion.

Which of the following statements about the basal ganglia and Parkinson’s disease is FALSE? The four cardinal motor features of Parkinson’s disease are tremor at rest, postural instability, rigidity, and slowness of movement. Exciting striatal neurons in the Direct Pathway increases basal ganglia inhibition of the thalamus, which blocks movement. A loss of approximately 80 - 90% of SNc (substantia nigra pars compacta) dopamine containing neurons causes the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation appears to work by...

Consider the brain areas and connections pictured in the simplified basal ganglia circuit. Parkinson’s disease results from the degeneration of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Dopamine can inhibit or excite neurons in the putamen, a sub-division of the striatum. Describe how this damage causes a chain of effects on activity in other basal ganglia areas and the structures they ultimately output to, and how this results in hypokinesia (reduced movements) in two different ways.
