Margaret is a supervisor in the online sales division of a large clothing retailer. She has let it be known that she is devoted to the firm and plans to build her career there. Margaret is hard-working and reliable, has volunteered for extra projects, has taken in-house development courses, and joined a committee dedicated to improving employee safety on the job. She undertook an assignment to research ergonomic office furniture for the head of the department and gave up several lunch hours to consult with the head of human resources about her report. Margaret filed the report late, but she explained the delay by saying that her assistant lost several pages that she had to redraft over the weekend. The report was well received, and several of Margaret’s colleagues think she should be promoted when the next opening arises.

Question: Evaluate Margaret’s skill in building a power base. What actions has she taken that are helpful to her in reaching her goal? Is there anything she should have done differently?

Power base is the capacity that person A has in order to influence the behaviour of another person Band B does whatever B would not have otherwise done. Whatever explanation Margaret had given after filing the report late , was well taken because Margaret had a good reputation in the firm which she had made by her hard work.So without questioning her report ,which was submitted late was accepted.

Her goal was to build her career in the firm and so she was very devoted to the firm .She was hard working ,reliable and did extra projects. Margaret took an assignment to research on office furniture and submitted the report late giving the excuse that her assistant lost some pages of the report and so she had to redraft them. This was well taken and her colleagues were of the opinion that she deserves a promotion.

Margaret should have spoken the truth instead of blaming her assistant. In recognition of her dedication towards the firm , late submission of the report would have been accepted.
