Two long parallel wires are placed side by side on a horizontal table. The wires carry equal currents in the same direction. Which of the following statements are true?

Check all that apply.
The magnetic field is a maximum at a point midway between the two wires
The magnetic force between the two wires is attractive.
The magnetic force between the two wires is repulsive.
The magnetic field at a point midway between the two wires is zero.

Expert Solution

The following case can be considered as shown in the picture.

here we can see that current is flowing in the same direction thus magnetic field produced will be in opposite direction of the other wire as shown and as per right hand thumb rule. Now applying flemmings right hand rule which says our thumb gives direction of motion or force and fore finger gives direction of magnetic field. And the middle finger gives the direction of the current. So according to this law the force due to wire 1 will be towards right and force due to second wire will be towards left. So the forces will be attractive. We can also see that direction of produced magnetic field is in opposite to each other hence they will cancle out each other at the mid point of the wire so OPTIONS 2 AND 4 are the correct answer.

If your doubt is cleared please give an upvote it means a lot. Its a humble request to you.
