Write chemical equations for the following. Indiciate physical states and write net ionic equations. If there is no reaction indicate so.

a) ammonium phosphate + magnesium sulfate

b)Potassium carbonate + ammonium chloride

c) magnesium + acetic acid.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1)

2(NH4)3PO4(aq) + 3MgSO4(aq) ---> 3(NH4)2SO4(aq) + Mg3(PO4)2(s)

Net ionic equation :

(NH4)3PO4(aq) -----> 3 NH4+(aq) + PO43-(aq)

MgSO4 ----> Mg+2(aq) + SO4-2(aq)

Combining above equations :

6NH4+(aq) + 2PO43-(aq) + 3Mg+2(aq) + 3SO4-2(aq) ----> Mg3(PO4)2(s) + 6NH4+(aq) + 3SO4-2(aq)

Net ionic equation :

3Mg+2(aq) + 2PO43-(aq) ---> Mg3(PO4)2(s)

Remaining ions are spectator ions which donot involve in reaction

2) K2CO3(aq) + 2NH4Cl(aq) ------> 2KCl(aq) + NH3(g) + CO2(aq) +H2O(l)

K2CO3(aq) -------> 2K+(aq) + CO32-(aq)

NH4Cl(aq) ----> NH4+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

Ionic equation :

2K+(aq) + CO32-(aq) + NH4+(aq) + Cl-(aq) ---> 2K+(aq) + CO2(g) + NH3(aq)+H2O(l) + Cl-(aq)

Net ionic equation :

CO32-(aq) + NH4+(aq) -----> NH3(aq) + CO2(g)+H2O(l)

Remaining ions are spectator ions which donot involve in reaction

3) Mg(s) + 2CH3COOH(aq) -----> Mg(CH3COO-)2aq + H2(g)

2CH3COOH(aq) -----> CH3COO-(aq) + 2H+(g)

Mg(s) ----> Mg+2(aq)

Ionic equation :

Mg(s) + 2CH3COO-(aq) +2H+(aq) -----> 2CH3COO-(aq) + Mg+2(aq) + H2(g)

Net ionic equation

Mg(s) + 2H+(aq) ------> Mg+2(aq) + H2(g)

Acetic acid is a weak acid and cannot dissociate completely so acetate ions are spectator ions
