An alkane with the formula C6H14 can be prepared by hydrogenation of either of only two precursor alkenes having the formula C6H12. Write the structure of this alkane, give its IUPAC name, and show the reactions. My confusion is to why the answer is not simply 2,3-hexene and the alkane is not hexane.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. As in question u are given an alkane of molecular formula C6H14 . So total no. of structural isomers possible for this compound can be five as shown in the first image. Now precursor is an alkene of molecular formula C6H12 . So u have to see no. of different alkenes to prepare the five isomers of alkane.
  2. For compound (i) there can be three precursor of alkene are possible.
  3. For compound (ii) there can be three precursor of alkene are possible.
  4. For compound (iii) there can be four precursor of alkene.
  5. For compound (iv) there is only one alkene is possible.
  6. For compound (v) there are two alkene possible. As said in the question that compound C6H14 can be prepared by only two alkenes of formula C6H12 . So it is required compound.
