What is the final pH of a solution made by mixing 100 mL of 0.05 M HNO3, 100mL of 0.15 and 1,800 mL water?

Solutions

Expert Solution

HNO3                                           HCl                                   resultant solution

M1 = 0.05M                                  M2   = 0.15M                           M3   =

V1   = 100ml                                   V2 = 100ml                         V3    = 100+100 +1800 = 2000ml

         M3       =   M1V1 + M2V2/V3

                    = 0.05*100+0.15*100/2000     = 20/2000      = 0.01M

[H^+]   = 0.01M

   PH   = -log[H^+]

           = -log0.01 = 2
