What happens to failed innovations?
Richard James invented the Slinky. Very interesting right?
Well maybe not but, did you know that Mr. James was not trying to invent a toy?
Innovations come from creative and intellectual imaginations being put into unstrcutred process with certain variables in control while others out of control. In such a process the chances of failure is very obvious. A person, team or organization working on an innovation cannot control the failure from happening to a great extent. What they can control is what cna be done from the failure to make it productive. Accepting the reality of failure being related to innovation is essential. Even the biggest companies have more records of failures then successful innovations. Failed innovations should be analysed critically to make something productive and successful from it. An innovation can be successful if it is useful or even accepted by the audience in some way.
As mentioned in the exmaple above, Richard James who was a mechanical engineer was designing a secutiry device for the navy. In the process he reached the stage of having coiled wires which he dropped from his hands on the floor. As the wire started sumbling on the floor he got the thought of making a toy out of it. Hence the failed inventions can also be changed into sucess if proper thought is given to it working with an open and creative mind. The innvoation should not be limited to only the deisgn or outcome planned from it. Seeing the details of the innovation in all ways can help in making failed innovation also a success.
