1. The Build a Tower, Build a Team TED Talk describes an exercise to encourage collaboration among team members. The textbook describes the five stages of group development – Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning. Please explain how a team might move through each of the phases while creating the tower. 2. Describe a situation in your work place where your team went through the five stage of group development. Which stage was the most challenging? Why? How did the leader help to facilitate an atmosphere of collaboration? What could he or she have done better? Two to three pages, double-spaced, 12 font. Answer to question 1:
A brief explanation is provided below about the five stages below to create a tower.
Forming:
Establishment of ground rules and the formation of a team are the main attributes of this stage. Thus, the team is formally introduced at the stage to decide the future course of action of a project.
Storming:
The members of the tower building team shall communicate with each other to share their feelings about the project.
Norming:
Acceptance of the point of views of other team members and the importance of it to successfully create the tower.
Performing:
After appraising the environment and the outside atmosphere and with sufficient knowledge about the team members the team commence its work to complete the development of the tower. Flexibility is key to the success at this stage.
Adjourning:
The assessment of the work performed by the different team members will be conducted with the objective of transition of roles of the team members to improve the implementation of the project.
Answer to question 2:
The most challenging phase of the five phases in group development is performing as often it has been seen that despite all the above phases being correctly completed a group fails to perform in accordance with the expectation to complete a project.
The leader by creating a friendly environment with healthy competition can facilitate an atmosphere of collaboration. However, the line of communication between the team members could have been improved.
