Explain the effect on your calculated acid concentration if the following error occurred:

1)The dilute HCL was over-diluted in the volumetric flask.

2)The flask that the student added the dilute acid to before the titration was wet.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) The standard solutions are prepared in volumetric flasks. While preparing solution of dilute HCl required amount of HCl is added to the water and then the flask is filled upto the mark. If the acid is over diluted that is more water is added to the solution then the concentration of the the acid will decrease (with increase in dilution).

2) During the titration volume of base × concentration of bade equals to number of moles of base and this is used to determine number of moles of acid in the solution. The titration is carried out to get volume of base which is used to neutralise the acid and since we know volume of acid added to the flask, concentration of acid is carried out. The presence of water in the flask will change the volume of the acid but will not affect the number of moles of acid present neither the initial volume added to flask is changed in each titration. Therefore, flask being wet before the titration will not lead to any error in the calculated acid concentration.

1.You need standard aqueous HCl of about .04 M concentration. Explain why you need to dilute a whole number volume rather than use the precise volume required to give .04000M HCl. For example assuming you had .1164 M HCl you would dilute 75.00ml to 250.00 ml, rather than diluting 85.90 mL to the same volume. 2. Concentrated hydrochloric acid solution is 37.0% HCL and has a density of 1.19g/ml. A dilute solution of HCL is prepared by diluting 4.50mL of this acid to 100.00mL with water. Then 10.0mL of the dilute HCL is used for the reaction with AgNO3 solution as shown below: HCL(aq)+AgNO3(aq) to HNO3(aq)+AgCL(s) How many mL of 0.1105M AgNO3 solution is required to precipitate all of the chloride as AgCl(s)? What is the effect on your calculated molar mass if the following happened: a. The team lost some t-butanol solvent prior to adding the solid unknown and starting the determination of the freezing point of the solute/solvent mix but kept the original t-butanol mass in their calculations. b. The team massed out 0.9000g of unknown solute but only got 0.7000g into the t-butanol solvent but used the 0.9000g in their calculations.
