Plagiarism is copying others' words or work and presenting as his/her own work. If the work of others is taken and added to his/her work with proper references and citation it will show that the other's work or word is taken to strengthen the view of the student who is submitting his assignment.
There is various work that comes under plagiarism.
1. Direct plagiarism: This is the type of copying where the student copy-paste others work word to word and present as his/her own work.
2. Self-plagiarism: When one's own previous work is presented in part or full without taking the prior permission from the authority to whom the work has to be submitted.
3.Mosaic plagiarism: This is also known as Patch writing when the students copy a part of other's work and use it as his own without citation or reference or using the synonymous replacing the original words.
4. Accidental plagiarism: Most of the students face this problem because sometimes the students remember the word to word definitions and while writing they use these accidentally without mentioning the original writer and attributing the author.
5.Mash-Up: This is the type of plagiarism where two or more sources are used and merged into one.
It is very difficult to keep oneself fully away from plagiarism, the best way is to learn the material and write in our own words, and in such a way that it should not change the meaning of the content and the matter is delivered to the professor for verification that is in his/her own words.
2. At The University of Southern Mississippi, the integrity policy of the university defines cheating, lying, stealing as an offense, that means the students try to cheat the examiner by presenting other's work as his work and lying to self and with the university, and any students who do not follow these instructions are subjected to punishment under cheating and plagiarism.
This offense is not coming under criminal offense it is an "intellectual property theft" where the others work is robbed and the original writer is deprived of his due recognition.
In the university, if the student is found plagiarizing the material he can be punished, by giving warning and given an opportunity to explain the situation. Secondly, the matter will be taken to the head of the department. It depends upon the checking professor what work he takes as plagiarized and what is not plagiarized, depending upon the situation and getting a proper explanation form the students the university can decide on a course of action that can be losing an assignment, marks, suspension or expulsion all these depends upon how his work is scrutinized.
In the real world, it is not possible to keep oneself away from plagiarism because there are many cites and websites are present on the net students gain their knowledge from reading the material using different sources. They collect knowledge and make their own notes and work. It is better if the portion of original work like quotes and sayings are used it should be given with proper citation and references and adding his/her own thoughts and elaborate on it. By doing this the students are not stealing lying or cheating with other's work internationally.
