How does acid rain form?

How does acid rain form?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Due to dissolution of CO 2 , SO 2 and NO 2 with rain water producess ccarbonic acid , Sulphuric acid and nitric acids respectively. The rain water has acidic hydrog ion concen about 10-5 M. The sulphur anand Carbons in air comes from volcanoevolcanoes, geothermgeothermal hot springs , industrial purpose ( burning of coals) .These S and C are reacts with O 2

S+O 2 = SO 2 and C+O 2 = CO 2 reacts with H 2 O....

SO  2 (g) + H 2 O (l) = H 2 SO 4 , CO 2 (g)+ H 2O (l) = H 2CO 3 and N O 2 (g) + H 2O (l) = H NO 3 + H N O 2.

These acids arare mixed with the rain water and acidity of the rain water increases ie; P H of rain water decreases.. The nitric oxides is formed in high localised tempereture which is created by lighting strickes. Notrogen dioxide is also produced in very high temperature auch as motor vehicles and combustion chambers of power stations. And finally mixed with water forms nitrus and nitric acids as above.

This acid contaminated rain is called acid rain which fall on the eearth surface and causi haharmfuhaharmful effect on the all of natural ththings and environment and human beings.

Effects of acid rains: 1) Damages plants leaves so, hamrmful for trees.

2) changes the P H of the lake and see and pond wawater ,so, killkills fish ,eggs and P H sencitive organorganisms .

3) WWhen acid rains falls on monuments or building mmade by mamarbel, stone or concrete alalso damaged as follos

CaCO3 (s) (merbal or limestone) +H2SO4 ----> CO2(g) + H2O(l) + Ca(N O3) (aq)

4) metal alloy may be damaged called mmetal corrosion

As acid rairain is harmful so it is necessary to prevent this and it will be prevent or controlled through the regulation of release of acidic oxides SO 2 and NO 2.
