GIve lewis structures for methane and dihydrogen monoxide. If you had pure samples of each compound, which would you expect to have the lower boiling point and why?
The boiling point of methene is lower than water(dihydrogen monoxide),this is because of the difference between the bindings present in them.because oxygen is a electronegative element so it creates a permanent dipole moment in water and a positive charge on hydrogen atoms and negative charge on oxygen atom.so oxygen attract the hydrogen atoms of nearby water molecules hence a strong attraction called hydrogen bonding present in water molecules . In order to break the intrinsic bonding in water you need to give more energy so boiling point of water is higher than a equivalent molecule without hydrogen bonding. Methane can not form hydrogen bonding between them but there is only weak London dispersion forces which is weaker than hydrogen bond so a significantly less energy to be given to break the bonds if methane comparison of water.Hence because if hydrogen bonding present in water, methane has lower boiling point than of water.
