Why it is not right to call them living things? _________________________

Sort out some information about different human DNA and RNA viruses, complete the following table:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: DNA or RNA virus? reproduces alters human DNA

in cytoplasm or nucleus? or not?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Herpes virus

Mumps virus

HIV virus

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something to think about: corona virus has size 120 nm ( remember? 1 nm= 0.000001 mm)

Single-use face mask can trap particles with size of 3000 nm and bigger. Surgical level 1 mask can trap particles with size 100 nm. Which mask can really protect you from air-born corona virus? __________________

Using simple mask could protect OTHER PEOPLE from your droplets in case you sneeze or cough.

More about corona virus. List all chemicals this infective agent is made of : ______________

Which one of these chemicals would be detached from virus particles by soap/detergent and destroy virus? ___________________________________

What you have to do to keep your immune system strong? _________________________

8.  Gene regulation. Please, read about it on Pages! Answer the following questions:

-- what causes the tortoiseshell pattern on a cat? _______________________________

-- in case of bacteria E. coli, which chemical has to be present to start production of enzymes to break down milk sugar?

Solutions

Expert Solution

** Viruses don't contain cells , rather do not use energy. It is only active if it comes in contact with the host cell. So it is not considered as a living thing.

** DNA Virus :- has dna as genetic material. Ex - herpes virus , Mimi virus , etc.

RNA Virus :- has rna as a genetic material. Ex- COVID-19 , Ebola virus, common cold etc

DNA alters in nucleus.

** Herpes virus:- It is a DNA virus. After initial infection, the virus gets into the nerve roots and spreads to the sensory nerve ganglia.

Mumps virus:- It is a RNA virus. It infect pancreatic beta cells.

HIV virus :- It stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is transferred in blood, semen or vaginal fluid.

** N95 respirator mask

** Viruses consist of : ribonucleic acid (RNA), proteins and lipids.

The viralself-assembly is based on weak “non-covalent” interactions between the proteins, RNA and lipids. Together, these act together like Velcro, so it is hard to break up the self-assembled viral particle. Still, we can do it — with soap!

**Sleep like a regular human being.
Eat more garlic.Drink lemon, honey, ginger and turmeric with warm water. Make a batch of chicken soup.Make workouts a part of your weekly regimen.Indulge in tea time.Have yogurt for breakfast.Soak up some sun.

** One form of the gene codes for orange fur (XB), and the other form codes for black fur (Xb).  A female cat heterozygous at that locus (XBXb) will not be orange. Instead, her coat will be a patchwork of orange and black, a condition known as tortoiseshell.

**  Chemical that has to be present to start production of enzymes to break down milk sugar is Lactases.

Some scientists call the Kingdom Protists the ‘miscellaneous’ kingdom, where all things that are not obviously a plant, animal, fungi, or prokaryotes are lumped together. Others argue that Protists as a group are uniquely different from all other life forms. Make an argument on both sides, using specific characteristics of Protists to support your positions.
