Vertical banded gastroplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the volume of the stomach in order to produce weight loss. In a recent study of Type 2 diabetics, 96 patients with Type 2 diabetes underwent this procedure and 77 of them experienced a recovery from diabetes. In another study of Type 2 diabetics, of 73 patients who changed their diet and began exercising, 45 recovered from diabetes. At the 0.05 level of significance we would like to examine if there is enough evidence to conclude that surgery was a superior treatment for diabetes than was diet/exercise.

a. State the null and alternative hypotheses needed to make this decision.

b. Determine the appropriate test and calculate the p-value for the test.

c. Based on the data and the test performed, state your conclusion as to whether the surgical treatment is better than the non-surgical treatment for diabetes.

Solutions

Expert Solution

i am denoting surgical group by 1 and non surgical treatment (diet/exercise.) by 2.

given data and necessary calculations are:-

the pooled proportion be:-

a).hypothesis:-

b). test statistic is:-

the p value is :-

[ in any blank cell of excel type =NORMSDIST(2.6689)]

c).decision:-

p value = 0.0038 < 0.05 (alpha)

we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is enough evidence to claim that surgery was a superior treatment for diabetes than was diet/exercise at 0.05 level of significance.
