Sally has blood type B- and her daughter Sophia has A-. List the possible genotypes for Sally and Sophia.
Given the information in the question above, which of the following men could be Sophia’s father? Jim B+ Charlie O- George B- Fred A+
Bob, who is B+, has fathered a child AB-. Give the possible genotypes for Bob and the mother.
Answer :
A. The genotype is the part of the genetic make up of a cell, and therefore of any individual, which determines one of its charectristics ( phenotype). The term was coined by the Danish botanist, plant physyologist and geneticist Wilhelm Johannsen in 1903.
Sally blood group B-. Her genotype are BB or BO
Sophia blood group A-, Possible genotypes are : AA or AO
Inheritance blood group : In a pair of chromosome, two genes, one on each determine the genotype of individual. These genes are of three types: 'O' , 'A', and 'B'. So a person can have any one of the six possible genotypes, OO, OA, OB, AA, BB, and AB. The 'o' gene is antigenecally unimportant. So, the antigens in the respective genotype will be OO-Nil, OA - A, OB -B, AA - A, BB - B, AND AB - AB. Therfore the blood group will be O, A, B, and AB.
Genotype | OO | OA | OB | AB | AA | BB |
Phenotype | O | A | B | AB | A | B |
Now, the two gwnws present in one's chromosome are inherited from the parents.
B.Fred A+.Sophia's blood group is A- . Her mother is B group. So to get A group in her daughter , father should have A genotype in his blood. In this question only Fred has A genotype to transmit to his daughter.
C. Bob's child AB- . Bob is B+. So to get AB- in his child, his wife should have A genotype . A genotype may be came from blood group like A- or AB-. Her genotype includes AO, AA, AB
Bob blood group B+, his genotype are BB or BO
His wife's possible blood group are B- and AB-
Her possible genotypes are BB, BO, AB.
The Rh factor is inherited independently from the ABO blood type. Genotypes for the Rh factor are +/+,,+/- , and -/-. People who are +/+ or +/- possess the Rh ( D) antigen and test as Rh positive . People who are -/- do not possess the Rh (D) antigen and test as Rh negative.
