describe the procedure for carrying out solvent extraction from an organic layer into an aqueous layer, where the aqueous layer is heavier than the organic layer. Then, describe the procedure for a solvent extraction from an aqueous layer into an organic layer, where the aqueous layer is heavier than the organic. please higlight main differencces between the two procedures.
Ans. The principle and procedure for both the extractions remains the same.
Transfer the two solution in a separatory funnel. Gently mix the content several times with venting. Allow the two phases to separate. The heavy aqueous is at bottom and the lighter organic layer is at top of aqueous layer.
# Case 1. Extracting the solute from Organic to Aqueous layer: Since the desired solute is extracted in the aqueous phase, be careful not to discard it. The heavier aqueous layer at the bottom should be removed through the valve near the bottom.
# Case 2. Extracting the solute from Aqueous to Organic layer: Be careful not to discard the organic phase because it consists our desired solute. The organic layer is poured/ decanted through the mouth at top of separatory funnel.
