11) Are there certain types of schizophrenia that take longer to emerge and certain types that have a more favorable prognosis? Explain.
Schizophernia is a chronic and severe mental disorder and it affects a person's thoughts, ffelings and his behavior. and often leads to significant social and occupational dysfuction..
In schizophernia there will be positive symptoms like hallucinations (sensory distortions eg:- seeing things that are not real) and delusions (thought distortions,eg thinking as someone will kill the person,).and disorganised behavior and speech.
There will also be negative symptoms like ,lack of motivation, poor concentration, blunted emotions etc.
Schizophernia is devided in to many sub types.
Commonly the onset of schizophernia is on late adolescence or in early adulthood. Late onset that is after 45 years is seen in rare cases.
In certain types of schizophernia the onset take longer time. and some types have favourable prognosis compared to others.
The onset of paranoid schizophernia is usually later in life.and then progress gradually,in a subtile way but with harmful effects. Usually its onset is in late 30's or at 40's. as compared to other types.Complete recovery usually does not occur.Symptoms are delusions ,hallucinations, but no disorganisation in speech,.or motor behavior.
In one type of Catatonic schizophernia there will be alteration between excited cattonia and stupurous catatonia the onset in catatonic scizophernia is usually in the late 20,s or in 30's.and the corse is often episodic recovery from the episode is usually complete or recoverable..Only residual features are present after two or more episodes.Symptoms in catatonc are purposeless motor activity, extreme negativism,or mutism(refusing to speak), bizarre(strange or unusual) voluntary movement etc
In DSM there is a diagnostic category called Schizopherniform disorder .It shows the features of schizophernia, but duration is less thn six months and prognosis is usually better than Schizophernia.
Late Paraphernia is more common among women, the onset is later in life ,usually in 60's.Delusion of persecution with bizzare and fantastic contest(eg feeling as beeing raped, strangers entering the room etc), Hallucinations of all kinds.are present.
Most people with schizophernia live independently with community support. Studies shows that about 40% to 60% are likely to suffer lifelong impairment. the individuals who are diagnosed with schzophenia after the age on 45 are classified as late onset schizophernia.
