In very exciting recent news, a possible earth-like planet was discovered orbiting Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the solar system. Proxima Centauri is "only" 4.2 light years away, and it is a red dwarf. Please read the linked article - there's an interesting description and several short videos. Tidal locking (a topic we learned about earlier in the course) is important and - the next statement is something I did not know - recent computer models suggests that an atmosphere can prevent tidal locking from occurring. We also calculated in a previous assignment that it would take over six thousand years to get to Proxima Centauri at the fastest speeds we are currently capable of reaching.
Anyway, now for the question. Let us assume that we can travel at 99% the speed of light. A mission is launched to travel to Proxima Centauri at this speed. The mission spends one year in the Proxima system and then returns to earth. How long would this total round trip take according to the people on earth?
Answer is years.
PS: the amswer is not 67!!!!
