6.57. Sisters Ania and Jola sell tulips in spring in different parts of town. One day they divided 70 tulips among themselves so that Ania got x tulips and Jola y tulips. Each of them set a different price for 1 tulip. After selling all the flowers it turned out that both girls received the same amount. If Anna had sold y tulips, she would have received 45 USD. If Jola had sold x tulips, she would have received 80 USD. Calculate how many tulips Ania sold and how many Jola sold. At what price per piece did Anna and Jola sell tulips?

Nell, Nina, and Nora Sanders, who are sisters, sell their principal residence (owned as tenants in common) in which they have lived for the past 25 years. The youngest of the sisters is age 60. The selling price is $960,000, selling expenses and legal fees are $63,000, and the adjusted basis is $120,000 (the fair market value of the residence when inherited from their parents 25 years ago; they made no capital inprovements during the time they held the residence)....

It is the first day of spring, and a gloomy 100-day winter has finally ended. Over those 100 days, 36 of them were clear, 24 of them were cloudy (but not rainy), and the remaining 40 were rainy. Denote the probability that a given winter day next year will be clear, cloudy, and rainy, respectively, and assume that next winter’s weather will follow the same pattern as this year’s. Please derive expressions for the maximum-likelihood estimates of Pclear, Pcloudy and...

What is the temperature on a spring day when the resistance is 216.0 Ω?
A carbon resistor is to be used as a thermometer. On a winter day when the temperature is 4.00 C, the resistance of the carbon resistor is 217.3 Ω. What is the temperature on a spring day when the resistance is 216.0 Ω?   Take the temperature coefficient of resistivity for carbon to be α = −5.00×10−4 C-1.
