The study of functioning of plants is termed as plant physiology. It deals with plant morphology, ecology, phytochemistry, plant cell biology and its genetic applied molecular biology. The study involves the processes like circadian rhythms, photoperiodism, photomorphogenesis, plant nutrition, plant hormone functions, nastic movements, seed germination, photosynthesis and respiration. Plant physiology si the important platform in increasing the total productivity of plants and their nutritional value. It also helps to raise the quality of their tissues and organs for commercial purpose.

Global climate changes marked by alteration of important biochemical and biophysical processes of the Earth cause severe impact on the World economy especially the critical challenges are kept on the way of agricultural activities like increasing crop production to meet the food demand of growing population, provide food security for the future projected population and protecting the environment and sustaining the functions of eco systems. Therefore, the global changes impose the principle threat to vegetation functioning which has potential negative feed back effects on the biosphere and consequently to the entire Earth-system. The application of plant physiology is observed to have a great impact on the industries which rely on plant growth substances and aid in range of commercial products for utilization in currect world scenario.
