The tension between Iran and the United States stretch back decades. It is the conduit for about 40 per cent of the world's oil tanker traffic and has been the recurrent backdrop of military bluster. There are a number of causes behind the US -Iran enmity, but we may trace back to Sept 11 attack. This worsened the situation.

United States had alleged that Iran had a program to develop nuclear weapons. Iran maintained that its nuclear program was aimed only at generating electricity, and the US said that nuclear armed Iran is not accepted. Iran has also been accused by the US for giving support to the terrorist group ,al quaida. Again, American officials accused Iran of harassing and provoking their naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran denied the claim, but Iran denied it. Thus the tension was going on.....

In 2017, when Trump administration started, citizens of Iran and several other countries were banned from entering into the U S. Again the tension mounted up in 2019, with the US deploying of military forces in the Persian Gulf. In May 2019, four commercial ships were damaged in the Gulf of Oman, but the US said that it was a "sabotage attack". After that there were " warnings" and "announcements"....Some time President Trump said about "the official end of Iran". "Anything will happen or happened", said he .

At last, the targeted killing of Soleimani , the second most powerful person of Iran caused the tension to reach its zenith.

For India:

. Even though President Trump pointed out the attacks that had happened in Delhi after the killing of General Ghazim Soleimani, India so far never reacted the attack. The Foreign Affairs Ministry repeatedly urged to both the countries to keep calm, a very good and wisely said opinion!! India cannot stand with either of these countries, she cannot be in enmity with these countries too, but HOW FAR? The question may remain. India's prime concern was about the aftereffects if US were replied in the same coin.

Iran was not happy with India- US relation. Iran had pointed out about the ban on Iranian oil to India as the example of India's relation with US. But so far Iran does not have a negative attitude to India on commercial basis. The NCTC is very important to both the countries as it relates sea, land and rail routes of India, Russia, Europe etc.

So , India will be a mediator as far as this issue is concerned.
