The network architect/engineer usually are the ones asking the questions. And the customers, users, and IT staff using the network usually are the ones that would provide answers to the network design questions.

Listed below are a few basic subject areas to consider when forming your questions. You may use this list to identify what questions would be asked for each of the subject areas. You may include other subject areas as you deem appropriate.

  • Users
  • Organization Growth
  • Security
  • Budget

The questions that I would like to ask on the above criteria are as follows:

  1. Users:
    • How is the network working for you?
    • Are you able to perform each and every activity on the network?
  2. Organization Growth:
    • How to impact on the growth of the organization with the help of the network?
    • What are the reasons behind no growth of the organization due to the network?
  3. Security:
    • How can we increase the security of the network?
    • What are the issues with the security that you were able to find out on the network that needs to be looked at?
  4. Budget:
    • What is the budget that needs to be invested in making the network better than now?
    • Is the budget being wasted on the network where the investment is not required?
  5. Scope:
    • What are the scopes of the network that needs to be worked on?
    • How is the network working according to the users?
  6. Scalability:
    • Is increasing the scalability of the network be a good idea? If yes why?
    • What can we obtain by increasing the scalability of the network?
  7. Physical space within which to deploy the network devices:
    • Is there a requirement of extra physical space for network devices?
    • What are the network devices that need to be attached to the existing network?

Hence, these are the questions for all the scopes of the networks mentioned in the questions.
