What is the fundamental requirement of a statement for that statementto be scientific?

Write a statement that could be evaluated with science. Be creative, have fun and be absurd if you like.

Write a statement that could not be evaluated with science. Be creative, have fun and be absurd if you like.

2.

Describe in your own words what is a scientific theory.

Describe in your own words what is a hypothesis. How does this compare with a scientific theory?

3.

Can a scientific theory be proved (can it be shown that the theory iscertainly true)? Explain.

Can a scientific theory be disproved (can it be shown the theory is certainly wrong)? Explain.

Expert Solution

A statement could be a random idea that occurred in someone's mind or it could be an actual observation made by an individual or a group of people(researchers). It is put forward infront of scientific communities or organizations inorder to be accepted universally.

Fundamental requirements for a statement to be scienticfically correct are:

1. It should not be absurd.

2. The person who puts forward the idea should have definite reasons to support his view.

3. It is highly appereciated if there are mathematical proofs to prove the point.

4. There should be certain actual physical observations(experimental observations) to prove the point.

5. The idea should abide by the laws of science and nature.

6. The idea is put forward infront of scientific communities with valid reasons and with a lot of discussions and analysis and once the reasons are found to abide by the laws of science it is universally accepted as a scientific statement.

7. If the idea is simply a thought without an physical proofs then with a lot of discussions of the scientific communities all over the world arrive at a conclusion.

A statement that could be evaluated with science:

"ALL HUMANS LOOK ALIKE."

Now this idea could be evaluated with science because there are a number of observations to prove the point. Actual humans serve as observations as by simply by examining there physical features ,there various characteristics ,conclusions could be drawn. Also there are a number of biological theories to examine whether the statement is true or not. So, even by logic and with a number of strong scientific obervations and theories , the idea can be accepted or declined.

Thus, with proper conclusions if the idea comes out to be true it will be accepted as a statement.

A statement that cannot be evaluated with science:

"EVERYONE THAT WORKS HARD , ACHIEVES SUCCESS."

Now this statement is hard to evaluate with science as their are no mathematical formulas or scientific theories to support things like luck, destiny, success or failure. Science fails to give actaual proofs to predict whether a person working hard is bound to achieve success or failure. There is no mathematical formula to give the answer. No scientic theories, no laws to give the answer.

Thus, it is hard evaluate this statement with science and prove it to be a universal scientific statement with valid scientific(experimental) obervations to prove the point to be correct.

Scientific Theory:

A scientific theory is an explanation of the an idea given by a person or group of people. An idea becomes a theory after rigorous experiments and scrutiny of the obervations made. When certain valid reaons ,with or without mathematical proofs are found to be correct in order to explain a particular idea properly, it becomes a scientific theory, that is universally accepted by all scientific bodies.

Hypothesis:

A hypothesis is a proposed concept for a particular phenomenon. It basically means it is suppoesd to be true but there are not sufficient theories to prove it to be correct. So, if it has a strong perspective , it is accepted as something which still requires some work to be completed.

Difference of hypothesis and scientific theory:

Hypotheis and scientific theory are different things as a scientific theory has gone through a lot scrutiny processess and has solid reasons and scientific theories to support it. It means that it has completed its process of being accepted completely while a hypothesis can still have some room for improvement.

A scientific theory can definitely be proved or dispoved:

Once a concept is titled to be a scientific theory , it has been proved to be correct as it has alreay gone through the process of testing rigorously. The scientific observations, the theoretical proves ,mathematical proofs ,all are checked a number of times then it is proved to be true.

While if some other researcher founds some results opposite to that of the existng theory then he/she has to give extremely valid reasons to support the point. If they are found to be true then only the existing theory can be changed or completely discarded.
