A “sick society”? One way of interpreting the statistic that at least 12 percent of children suffer from a mental disorder is to argue that “something is wrong with our society.” If there is something wrong, what is it? Ineffective parenting? Insufficient research support for effective treatments? Apathy? After identifying some of the societal problems leading to mental disorders of childhood, you can ask about solutions. Should parenting classes be required? Should more money be spent on research? Should children be monitored by the government more closely, for example, mandatory psychological testing?
Children are the products of their environment such as, parenting, family, friends, education, culture religion etc. This would mean that they would develop normally in a favourable environment but might develop psychological disorders in unfavourable environment due to lack of emotional, physical and social support. The mot important impact would come from parenting thus, strengthening the parenting system and the family system is very important. America is an individualistic and materialistic country in which each one would be worried about oneself and may not be willing to sacrifice even for their children which would leave the children develop separately from both the biological parents. They would also face domestic violence and abuse at home which would impact them greatly. On the other hand, government has the responsibility of developing healthy citizens who would contribute to the development of the society. This would mean that government need to conduct psychological tests in the schools in order to identify those who would develop unstable mental states because these children would become anti-social personalities later. Thus, preventing them from developing it from the childhood by making more counselling and help available for them while also working with the parents to spend more time with the children would tackle the issues.
