What is the molarity of a solution made by adding 18.00 mL of 5.00 M sodium acetate to 55.00 mL of water? I got 1.64 as the molarity but when i enter that answer it says it is wrong, so i must be doing something wrong. Can you help?

Solutions

Expert Solution

total volume of the solution = 18.00 + 55.00

                                       =   73.00 mL

the molarity of the solution after adding water = millimoles / total volume

                                                                = 18.00 x 5.00 / 73.00

                                                                = 1.23 M

molarity of the solution = 1.23 M

note : you just used dilution formula C1 V1 = C2 V2

                                                    5.00 x 18.00 = C2 x 55.00

                                                      C2 = 1.64 M

this value you have got . but you added watet to the solution . so you have to take V2 as total volume 18 + 55 = 73 mL. that is the reason it went wrong .
