Solutions

Expert Solution

In the play 'The Sound of a Voice' by David Henry Hwang, there are many instances used as symbols to depict the relationship between the man and the woman.

  • Sharing a meal here symbolizes the connection, affection, and care the man and woman share. It symbolizes sharing important parts of their lives.
  • Flowers symbolizes the care and love the woman has in her. These are the flowers that were brought by all the men who visited her during all time. She has kept all flowers safe and takes care of them.
  • Swordplay here symbolizes the masculinity of the man, which is crushed by the sword skills of the woman that embarrasses him and forces him to leave.
  • The titular sound of a voice that man hears from the flowers symbolizes the fear and concern the man has while looking at them. As he heard before from others that the woman is a witch and she entraps men who visit her. He was frightened that he too might get entrapped but as the character of a flower is to spread smoothness and love, it only contributed to the man falling in love with woman more.
