Given a rock which has three times as much lead as Uranium-235 in it, how old is the rock assuming all the lead in the rock started as Uranium? The half-life of Uranium-235 is 7x108 years. Given a block of Uranium-235, how long before 75% of the block has turned to lead?

How is the presence of a magnetic field related to the rate of rotation of a planet?

Reducing atmosphere? Oxidizing atmosphere?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Earth's magnetic field is thought to be generated at its core due to presence of a liquid outer core. The outer core behaves as a dipole to create the magnetism. The rotation of planet causes stirring up of liquid core composed of magnetic material, and hence create a dynamo effect. The fast a planet rotates more is the magnetic field generated.

Reducing atmosphere is a place in atmosphere where some phenomenon will remove oxygen from atmosphere to stop oxidation. Some reducing gases are hydrogen, Carbon dioxide etc.

Oxidising atmosphere is caused by presence of sufficient oxygen to carry out oxydation . Oxydation is a process of addition of oxygen.
