Speculate about some worldwide changes likely to follow the advent of successful fusion reactors. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of electricity coming from a large central power station versus a network of many smaller solar-based stations owned and operated by individuals.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Large Central Power Stations versus smaller solar-based stations

  • The power has to be transported to long distances for consumption as small local solar based stations can only supply to very limited demand they will not have that issue.
  • Solar based plants cannot be operated in places which don't receive adequate amount of sunlight and hence Power be transported seems more feasible
  • Centralized power house will require to transport the power in high voltage mode for economic purposes, which will require electric power grids to step down the voltage something  smaller solar-based stations wont need.
  • If something goes wrong in the centralized power house then a very large area will face a power outage which wont be in case of Solar based plants.
  • Maintenance will be difficult as it is a source of power for many in centalized power house.

Some fusion reactors use an induction process in which thermal neutrons collide with deuterium particles that are essentially twice as massive (consisting of one proton and one neutron). Consider a scenario in which a neutron is traveling at 1500 m/s when it collides elastically with a deuterium particle that is initially at rest. Find the magnitude of the neutron's recoil velocity (in m/s). An air hockey puck of mass 0.42 kg is traveling at 3.5 m/s in a direction 30o...
