Gestaltists have to say about perception?

Gestalt principles would be explaining the way people see things. These help in identification of the works of visual perception. Through different laws. These laws include laws of proximity, similarity, figure and ground, continuity, closure as well as simplicity. The gestalt principles state that a person would be viewing the total picture or the element as a whole rather than looking at the single elements at once. This is because, we tend to see things in the most simplest ways as possible.

The theories of colour perception are:

  • Trichromatic theory: this theory was formulated by young and Helmholtz in which individuals would be adjusting the relative intensity of one, two or three sources of light which are of different wavelengths such that the mixture would be matched to an adjacent test field so as to match other wavelengths present in the visible spectrum. Limitations: is that yellow appears to be the primary colour and this theory is not able to explain the complementarity of wavelengths.
  • Opponent process theory: this theory of vision suggests that colour vision would be present in opposite channels, which also be called as complementary colours. The three basic vision channels are the red /green channel, the yellow/ blue channel and the black /white or the brightness darkness channels. According to this theory, the signals are processed through rods and cones in opposite or antagonistic manner. Limitations: this would be able to explain the negative image, but the effect of context would not be explained.
