Illustrating the basic principles for designing a product line of information goods.
1: Pick a Problem to Solve
In order to sell an information product successfully, you have to solve a problem. If you have an audience, you could survey them, or even offer free coaching calls to a few people to really get into what they are struggling with. If you don’t have an audience, look at forums in your niche, books on Amazon (and the reviews people leave), or other blogs and the comments there. Find a problem people have that they are willing to pay for, and solve it.
2: Create a Freebie
The next step is to see who’s interested. For this particular launch, for example, created an ebook. The idea behind this is to encourage people to take action. It’s easy to put things off when there are no deadlines.
Step 3: Tell People
Within a few weeks, you will have several hundred people on that list. Make sure to set the right expectations by telling them that I had a paid workshop coming. If you don’t have your audience yet, you’ll have to hustle more. It’s always going to be tough if you don’t have an audience, which is why I recommend building a small audience before you launch your first information product. Once your freebie is in place, and you’ve got a page up for it. Start telling people. If you have an audience, this is going to be easy.
