Explain how airlines use 'Route Optimization' in order to save the cost.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Most airlines use the integer programming model in order to find out the optimum flight route that helps it to minimize the flight operating expenses of the aircraft traits includes the cost of fuel, airway expenses, salaries of the crew members, and maintenance and depreciation of the aircraft. In this model, for selecting the best and optimum path, both the airway selection and flight level selection are taken. In the first stage, a suitable airway is selected by the airline before the departure of the flight as per the calculation depending on some preset factors so that the fuel consumption can be minimized. As various airways depart in a number of oceanic flights it is considered that once the aircraft enters a certain gate fix, it cannot change the airway selection. On the other side, it is possible to alter the flight levels while the cruise. In order to have better fuel efficiency, the pilots can alter the flight levels depending on the weather conditions information facilitated by the third party or the airline itself.

Mathematically, we will use an objective function with minimization of the fuel consumption. Apart from this, a number of constraints are also used to deal with the situation. In most of the researches, it has been found that the airlines can implement the real-time weather information to have greater fuel efficiency.

Airlines are comprised of many types of aircraft within their fleet to accomplish the route structure for the airline. Discuss the core components of planning for airlines from a fleet management perspective. You should examine how the airline’s fleet can impact route structure, the customer experience, safety, and the planning process. Include an example on how this can impact your mock airline’s passenger demand patterns from a pleasure vs. business travel perspective.

Determine if the following statements use optimization by total values or optimization by marginal analysis. a. Jan is living in New Jersey but frequently travels to Europe for work. He has three major airline loyalty schemes to choose from: Star Alliance, Sky Team, and One World. Assuming that Star Alliance offers the best services onboard (net benefit is $100 per trip), Sky Team the best prices (net benefit is $80 per trip), and One World the fastest planes (net benefit...

Charlie Brown is thinking about starting Wing-It Airlines to fly a commuter route in and out of a major city. Four planes are on the market that will do the job, but each has different flight, load, and operating characteristics. Charlie is unsure of the demand for his service, and feels that it may depend to some extent on the type of plane chosen. Whether or not the business is feasible may depend on which airplane is used in conjunction...

Scenario: American Airlines (AA) is trying to maximize profits on a certain international route with two kinds of travelers: vacationers (Group A) and business travelers (Group B). AA can effectively distinguish between the two types and can discriminate in pricing. Although fixed costs matter a lot for the calculation of profits, they do not matter for purposes of optimal pricing, so we’ll ignore them for now; however, we cannot ignore marginal cost, which we will assume is a constant $100...

Discuss two questions raised by the manager of route strategy of American Airlines: Why should an airline not be able to establish service anywhere in the world simply by demonstrating that it can be and will comply with the local labor and business laws of the host country? And some airlines such as Southwest and Alaska Air, have survived as niche players without going international or developing alliances with international airlines. Can they continue their strategy?
